WASHINGTON, D.C. – On May 17, on the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia, Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-12), Vice-Chair and founding member of the Congressional LGBTQ+ Equality Caucus, reintroduced legislation calling on Congress to recognize the unique challenges members of the LGBTQ+ community face, including violence, homelessness, and health disparities.
“This International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Interphobia, and Transphobia, we celebrate the resilience and strength of the LGBTQIA+ community while acknowledging the pervasive discrimination still faced across the globe today,” said Congresswoman Lee. “We honor the countless activists and advocates who have fought for our rights and paved the way for progress, while recognizing the work left ahead. I introduce this resolution to uplift and center the voices of LGBTQIA+ individuals and to affirm our commitment to a world that is truly inclusive and respectful. It is our diversity that makes us strong.”
This resolution recognizes the unique struggles members of the LGBTQIA+ community face, including violence, homelessness, and health disparities. This resolution is a call for full equality and acceptance for all LGBTQIA+ people in this country and around the world.
This resolution encourages:
- Health care providers to offer culturally and clinically competent care to the LGBTQIA+ community.
- Schools to support the creation of gay-straight alliances.
- Individuals to learn about national resources for those who identify as LGBTQIA+.
- Funding organizations, aid efforts, and governments to prioritize the health and human rights of LGBTQIA+ people.
