WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-12) released the following statement on House Republicans’ debt ceiling bill:
“Make no mistake: the cuts passed today by Republicans would be deep, harmful, and felt at the expense of hardworking people. Some of these cuts will run directly through my subcommittees and impact the people that can afford it the least. Cuts to programs like TANF, SNAP, and reducing investments in pandemic preparedness and climate disasters are irresponsible, dangerous and wrong.
“Decades of Republicans’ tax cuts for the mega rich and big corporations have added trillions to the debt, starved the economy of needed revenue, and failed to deliver their promised benefits for the economy or American workers. Now, the GOP is seeking to take away from our communities because of their inability to govern. That is never an answer. We won’t allow House Republicans to throw our communities under the bus to advance their extremist agenda.”
Congresswoman Lee is a member of the House Appropriations Committee and Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs. She also serves on the Appropriations Subcommittees on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies and Agriculture, Rural Development, Food and Drug Administration, and Related Agencies. The proposed Republican cuts would have severe impacts on programs overseen by these committees.
